How a small change lead to increased sales…
>> The Urban Element are a product design company. A pretty cool one at that. I mean, these guys really know how to make nice products. Here’s one of their products.
It’s a beautiful beech coffee scoop that clips your coffee bag together and also measures out exactly one tablespoon of ground coffee. Like a lot of nice things, it’s simple, tactile and a joy to use.
But nice products don’t sell themselves.
Don’t get me wrong, they were getting sales… but not as many as they deserved.
So what small change did we make?
We changed the packaging. Here’s how it used to look…
In some ways there was not much wrong with it, other than the visual messaging wasn’t as well crafted as the product itself. In short, it was under-selling itself.
It didn’t make use of that rich chocolatey-brown that we all know coffee beans to be. And if we’re brutally honest, it didn’t show an image of the product.
Here’s what it changed to.
It cost no more to run the new packaging. Not one penny.
Since the new packaging was launched sales are up and here are some of the comments from customers…
and finally, a word from the boss of the business…
“Obviously, we’ve done more than simply change the packaging, but there’s no doubt in my mind that the new packaging has helped our sales significantly.”

Why tell the story of an artist with a film?
>> Samuel Baker is an aquatic sculpture artist. His work commands a high price and telling his back story is critical to the value of his art. But, why a short film?
How else could you convey this much meaning, this much of the artists inner thoughts? A brochure perhaps. Or a blog. Both viable ideas, but…
The truth is people like to watch films. It’s easier than reading. And bear in mind that YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world (second only to Google).
This film reframed how customers saw Samuel Bakers sculptures. It gave them a greater understanding of what they were buying.
And, if you’ll allow me to show off a little, it also won a National Television Award.
